The Michigan Municipal League (the League) is seeking an Accounting Technician to provide a variety basic accounting functions to support our insurance programs. The approximate salary range for this position is $44,000 - $50,000. The selected candidate will assist with and complete a variety of basic accounting tasks for assigned insurance funds (such as Worker’s Compensation, Liability & Property Pool, Group Unemployment Program) including journal entries, bank reconciliations, accounts payable/receivable, audit and budget assistance, and other related tasks. We’re looking for a self-starter who can quickly learn new skills and deliver prompt and outstanding work. Our ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, is willing to take on new challenges, and can effectively and accurately juggle multiple tasks within deadlines with superior attention to detail. A sense of humor will come in handy as will a willingness to jump in to do what’s needed (we all do).

If you were working for us, here are just some things you would do (with or without a reasonable accommodation):

  • Provide exemplary internal & external bookkeeping and accounting support for assigned insurance funds. This includes preparing journal entries, performing bank reconciliations, and other related activities.
  • Process accounts payable for assigned insurance programs. Maintain vendor records and complete annual reporting requirements.
  • Process cash receipts for assigned funds. Generate invoices as needed and follows up on delinquent accounts.
  • Perform account reconciliations and analyze accounts for accuracy, investigating and resolving any discrepancies or variances discovered.
  • Assist with and participate in various budget and audit processes.
  • Research and resolve billing issues with members and third-party providers.

About You: Our ideal candidate will have:

  • A high school diploma is required. Additional education or technical experience is preferred.
  • Previous experience in a bookkeeping, accounting support, or similar role is required. Previous experience in insurance accounting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles and practices, including accounting software programs is required. Prior experience working with Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains (GP) is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of financial statements and narratives.
  • Intermediate skill working with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Superior organizational skills and close attention to detail.
  • Ability to learn new skillsets and master new technologies.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgement with a strong work ethic, while maintaining a flexible mindset.
  • Ability to live in Michigan to support the state we represent.
